              Medical coding is the process of converting diagnoses, treatments, services, and equipment used in healthcare into standard medical alphanumeric codes. The diagnoses and procedure codes are derived from the documentation in the medical records, such as the transcription of the doctor's notes, the results of the laboratory and radiologic tests, etc. Professionals in medical coding assist in ensuring that the codes are correctly applied during the medical billing process, which entails extracting the necessary information from the supporting documentation, assigning the proper codes, and generating a claim that will be reimbursed by insurance companies.

Three categories of medical alphanumeric codes are well-known worldwide:

• The World Health Organization (WHO) developed the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), a system that is widely utilised. The classification system is primarily used for data collecting and health records, among other things. These codes can categorise signs, conditions, illnesses, and fatalities.

• CPT codes are used in the US to identify certain medical, surgical, and diagnostic operations and services. This system, which has three categories—procedures and modern medical practises, clinical labs, and developing technologies—was created by the American Medical Association (AMA).

• The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) created the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) to facilitate in the processing of insurance claims for Medicare or other providers.
